Coffee & Donuts - Working with Holiday Paper All Year Round
I have a lot of paper pads in my stash. Some I get on sale and some I just can't walk past without putting it in my cart. After Valentine's day I had a near full paper pad that I didn't think I would be able to use until next year. That is until I pulled out my Jillibean Soup 'Donuts' stamp set. In the way back of the pad there is a whole page dedicated to donuts. I saw the combination and went for it.
The pattern on this paper is a little busy so I kept my card base basic in color.. I went with pink but blue or even red could have worked. Using a 3" circle punch I punched a circle that matched my card base to draw the card recipient's eye to the center of the card and break up the busy- ness of the background donuts.
On a separate piece of white card stock I stamped my images using Memento Tuxedo Black ink which is good for coloring with alcohol markers. The sentiment from my set actually read "Love. Life. Donuts." but "donuts" didn't quite fit on my mug so while the sentiment was mounted on my Tim Holtz Stamping Platform I inked the whole phrase but wiped the "donuts" clean. I could have masked this but I found it to be easier this way.
Next I wanted to add a donut so I used some scrap paper from my desk and some masking tape and masked off the coffee mug. There are a few ways to mask the coffee mug but I cut a curved paper for the lip of the mug and used the straight edge of a piece of paper. I left just a little bit of the black line showing to make sure the two images connect.
I was happy with the stamping and moved on to coloring. I kept it really basic and kept in the theme of the donuts in the background. A good tip for coloring is to blend your dark colors with a light color. When you do it this way you can see the dark color lift from the paper and blend in to the light color.
The last step now is to center the white circle on to the pink circle and mount the combo on to the donut background. I used little foam mounting squares I found in Joann to add some dimension to the card.
This card can be used for any occasion like birthdays or even as a friendly just because card. If you want to add a sentiment I would try the "Better Together" sentiment on a small banner.
